The Mosaic Centre for Conscious Community and Commerce

By: Cuku’s Nest Enterprises Ltd.

The Mosaic Centre for Conscious Community and Commerce is Alberta’s first net-zero commercial office building, which opened in the Edmonton community of Summerside in February 2015. Since then, it has been dubbed Edmonton’s “crown jewel” of sustainable construction, as well as a model of a triple bottom line commercial building – capturing the essence of sustainability by measuring its impact on the world in three parts: profitability, social/human, and environmental capital. The owners challenged the design team to deliver a net-zero-energy building to demonstrate the feasibility of low-energy-use buildings in cold climates. The result was a beautiful, sustainable and affordable building with the following features:

  • Powered by a 213 kW solar PV array.
  • Heated and cooled by a 32 borehole geothermal system.
  • 7,000 gal (26,500 L) rainwater retention underground tank for irrigation of plants.
  • 100% LED lighting to reduce electrical consumption. Fibreglass triple-glazed
