The Emerald Awards get a momentous makeover for our 30th anniversary

At an online Press Conference this morning, we announced the new categories for the 30th Annual Emerald Awards. This is the first time the categories have been completely revamped, fundamentally changing how we recognize environmental excellence in Alberta since our inauguration in 1991.

“We wanted to honour our 30th anniversary while aligning the Emerald Awards with current environmental priorities,” says Executive Director Gregory Caswell. “This change is monumental for us as a Foundation and how we recognize environmental excellence in our province. We are so thankful to the committee, which included past Emerald judges, external stakeholders, and prominent community members, who supported us with the update.”

Last year, as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we decided to grant 29th Annual Emerald Awards recipients $2000 in lieu of trophies to support the furthering of their work or donate to an environmental nonprofit of their choice. Moving forward, we have officially made the decision to continue providing a grant as the standard for all Emerald Awards recipients.

The 30th Annual Emerald Awards will take place online on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, coinciding with Canadian Environment Week. This morning we launched the nomination form and are accepting submissions until February 12, 2021. The shortlist will be announced on March 26, 2021. If you would like to nominate someone else, please Tell Us About Your Environmental Hero and we will contact them to complete their nomination. This excludes the Lifetime Achievement category, for which we’ll accept both first and third-party nominations.

Interview opportunities with the Executive Director or a Board Member are available. Please see the PRESS RELEASE and get in touch with Emma Crandell, Communications & Outreach Manager, at EMMA@EMERALDFOUNDATION.CA or (780) 616-1556 to set up an interview.
