Rothney Astrophysical Observatory

The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (RAO) at the University of Calgary serves as a nexus where teaching, research, public education, and community engagement intersect under the vast canopy of the cosmos. More than just a scenic spot nestled in the Rockies’ foothills, the RAO is on a mission to immerse school children, educators, community groups, and curious minds in the wonders of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This mission unfolds both beneath the stars and the sun, bridging the gap between academia and the broader community.

Operating at the heart of Calgary and the surrounding Foothills County, the RAO serves as an educational beacon for approximately 8,000 grade school students annually, alongside local residents, community organizations, and stakeholders. Through initiatives like the International Dark Sky Conference ALAN, the RAO has become a global advocate for combatting light pollution, engaging with diverse communities affected by systemic barriers related to environmental degradation.

For over two decades, the RAO has pioneered efforts to measure and mitigate light pollution, partnering with governmental bodies, educational institutions, and environmental organizations to protect the sanctity of natural darkness. By raising awareness and offering tangible solutions, the RAO strives to safeguard biodiversity, mitigate climate change, and promote responsible consumption and production practices.
