Water conservation is becoming a significant issue in southern Alberta. Diminishing reservoir levels and increasing demand pose several challenges. To help, the City of Lethbridge’s Communications & Engagement team introduced Water Wednesday. The series offers expert advice and engaging stories with practical water-saving tips for the community. Topics include saving water (and money) at home, xeriscaping and water conservation in agriculture.
The 22-story series has made a real impact in reducing local water use. In the summer of 2024, Lethbridge cut its water consumption by 16 per cent compared to the year before. It also stayed nine per cent below the five-year average. This helped the city avoid mandatory water rationing.
Water Wednesday returns with eight new stories in June and July of 2025.
