Category: Public Engagement & Outreach
Year: 2022
Result: Shortlist
Location: Calgary
Presented By: City of Calgary

The Power of Nature is a series of workshops designed to engage ESL learners with actions they can take to reduce their energy consumption, lower utility bills, understand the connection between actions and climate change, and learn about jobs in the alternative energy industry. The program was delivered through 16 – 1-hour presentations and 4 – 1-hour in language sessions. Connecting environmental experts with immigrant-serving agencies, Power of Nature is designed to make climate actions approachable.

Covering relevant topics such as Renewable 101, Energy Efficiency, and more, participants have said that this program has been tremendously impactful. After participating in the program, 91% of participants indicated that they would like to learn more about working in the renewable industry, and 90% of participants took the pledge to lower their energy use at home. In a follow-up survey conducted three months after participation, 75% of participants adopted energy-saving habits in their lives, and another 75% of participants responded that they are actively looking for jobs in the renewable sector.
