The Salay Prayzaan Solar Project at Métis Crossing is a groundbreaking 4.86 MW community solar initiative, demonstrating how Indigenous leadership, environmental stewardship, and clean energy innovation can come together to build a more sustainable future. Developed by the Otipemisiwak Métis Government in partnership with Smoky Lake County and the Town of Smoky Lake, this project reduces carbon emissions, generates economic opportunities, and empowers Métis communities.
Salay Prayzaan offsets 4,700 tonnes of CO₂ annually—the equivalent of powering 1,200 Alberta homes—and will prevent 110,000 tonnes of emissions over its lifetime (25 years). A portion of its revenue supports a Community Development Fund, investing in local sustainability projects. The project has also created training and employment opportunities for Métis workers and businesses, ensuring long-term economic benefits for the community.
