Indigenous communities often face barriers to accessing trusted environmental services, while gaps remain in Indigenous representation, local environmental monitoring capacity, and the transfer of Indigenous Knowledge between generations. At the same time, environmental changes are impacting the health of lands, waters, and traditional cycles and systems.
Mother Earth Environmental Services is addressing these challenges through a community-based approach that combines western environmental science with Indigenous Knowledge. Based in Whitefish (Goodfish) Lake First Nation #128, the team provides environmental monitoring, site assessments, and land management services while working alongside Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and youth. By creating local employment and training opportunities, the initiative builds long-term capacity within the Nation and ensures environmental services are led by environmental professionals most connected to the land.
Since 2020, the team has led over 30 projects, supported wildlife and surface and groundwater monitoring, supported waste management and recycling programs, and strengthened environmental stewardship within the Nation. We strive to assess the environment in a wholistic sense, as our Mother Earth knows no boundaries. These efforts protect the land, water, and traditional ways of life sustainably for future generations.
