Lac La Biche Lake has faced decades of pressure from nutrient buildup, evolving land use, and shoreline disturbance, leading to recurring algal blooms, declining water quality, and impacts on fish habitat and recreation. These challenges highlighted the need for a coordinated, long-term approach to protect the lake and its surrounding watershed.
The Watershed Management Plan Implementation Committee brings together local government, Indigenous and Métis communities, industry, and residents to turn planning into action. Through wetland construction, riparian restoration, and ongoing water monitoring, the initiative improves how water moves through the landscape and how contaminants are filtered. Community engagement is built into the work, with public events, student involvement, and accessible learning opportunities helping to strengthen shared responsibility for the watershed.
Together, these efforts are improving water quality, restoring habitat, and building a stronger connection between the community and the lake they depend on.
