The Invasive Plant Outreach (IPO) program is a community-driven initiative led by the City of Edmonton to combat invasive plant species, protect biodiversity, and promote native ecosystems. Through education, volunteer engagement, and hands-on management, the program empowers Edmontonians to take an active role in preventing the spread of invasive species and restoring natural habitats.
In 2024, the IPO program hosted 34 invasive plant pull events at 12 sites across Edmonton, where 309 volunteers contributed over 610 hours, removing 269 large bags of invasive plants from parks and green spaces. By engaging the public in hands-on activities, the program provides valuable training on plant identification, biodiversity conservation, and responsible land management.
Beyond fieldwork, the IPO team has engaged thousands of residents through community events, educational campaigns, and online resources. Their outreach includes a monthly newsletter, social media engagement, and one-on-one consultations via Edmonton’s 311 service, where they assist residents in identifying and managing invasive plants on private property.
