For many young people, cycling is no longer a common way to get around. Safety concerns, limited access to bikes, and a lack of cycling skills have left many school bike racks empty and reduced opportunities for youth to travel independently. Youth en Route is working to change that by helping students gain the confidence, equipment, and knowledge needed to choose active transportation.
Through partnerships with Calgary schools, Youth en Route delivers cycling education programs that teach students how to ride safely and confidently on city streets. The organization provides refurbished bikes, helmets, and locks, many of which are repaired and restored from bikes that would otherwise end up in landfills. Students also learn basic maintenance skills and explore safe cycling routes in their communities.
By making cycling more accessible, Youth en Route is helping young people build independence, reduce transportation emissions, and develop lifelong habits that support healthier communities and a more sustainable transportation future.
