The Come Grow With Us Passive Solar Greenhouse Project is transforming education in Red Deer by giving students hands-on experience in sustainable food production, energy-efficient building design, and environmental stewardship. Led by The Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools, this living classroom integrates STEM learning with real-world skills, preparing students to tackle climate change and food insecurity in their communities.
Constructed using leading-edge passive solar building technologies, the greenhouse operates at a fraction of the energy used by conventional greenhouses. Its solar-geothermal system reduces freezing hours by 94.69%, ensuring optimal growing conditions year-round without fossil fuel heating. A zero-waste irrigation system conserves water while students learn about sustainable agriculture.
Located in a high-need community, the project provides fresh produce for school food programs and local families, helping to combat food insecurity while promoting healthy eating habits. The space also serves as a mental health support area, offering students a calming environment where nature-based learning improves well-being.
