Burke Creek Ranch: 135 Years of Stewardship and Regenerative Ranching

Category: Land
Year: 2025
Result: Recipient, Shortlist
Location: Claresholm

For over a century, Burke Creek Ranch has been a dedicated steward of Alberta’s native grasslands, preserving one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. By practicing regenerative grazing, the ranch not only produces sustainably raised beef but also actively sequesters carbon, restores soil health, and protects critical wildlife habitats. This commitment to conservation ensures that the land remains a thriving ecosystem for future generations.

Spanning 13,000 acres, Burke Creek Ranch is part of Canada’s Living Labs Initiative, conducting research to quantify carbon sequestration and measure improvements in soil health. The ranch’s work has already resulted in richer topsoil, increased biodiversity, and healthier water systems. Through strategic grazing, the land absorbs more rainfall, reduces runoff, and supports 147 wildlife species, including 29 at-risk species.

Conservation efforts include the restoration of Limber Pine forests, riparian willow planting, actively participating in the Wild Turkey population re-establishment program with Alberta Conservation Association, and creek bank rehabilitation projects to protect Alberta’s waterways.
