In urban environments, waterways are often overlooked, and Indigenous youth face limited opportunities to lead in freshwater stewardship or reconnect with the lands and waters that have sustained their communities for generations.
Beyond the River brings Indigenous youth to the forefront of caring for the North Saskatchewan River and its surrounding ecosystem. Led by First Nations, Métis, and Inuit emerging leaders and guided by Elders and Knowledge Keepers, the program combines hands-on restoration with cultural learning. Participants take part in activities like river cleanups, native planting, and water monitoring, while also learning language, history, and responsibilities tied to the river. By removing barriers and creating space for leadership, the program makes environmental stewardship more accessible and culturally grounded.
Since launching in 2024, the initiative has restored hundreds of hectares, engaged thousands of community members, and supported a new generation of Indigenous leaders who are shaping how water is cared for in Edmonton.
