As communities grow and climate patterns shift, stormwater management systems must do more than simply move water away. They must help communities adapt to both intense rainfall and periods of drought while protecting surrounding ecosystems. In Calgary’s Alpine Park community, MAGNA Engineering Services Inc., working with Dream Asset Management Corporation, set out to design a stormwater solution that could meet these challenges while preserving the site’s natural wetlands and ravines.
Together, they developed the Alpine Park MAGNA Stormpark™, a nature-based stormwater system designed to manage large storm events while improving water quality. The system combines sediment forebays, storage ponds, treatment wetlands, and biofilters that use plants, layered soils, and microbial processes to clean runoff before it enters the surrounding environment.
The result is a stormwater system that protects the community from flooding while supporting wetland function, improving downstream water quality, and creating habitat for plants and wildlife. By integrating climate resilience, biodiversity, and public green space into essential infrastructure, the Stormpark demonstrates how urban development can work with natural systems rather than against them.
