Alberta Capital Airshed – Innovations in Air Quality Public Education

Category: Air
Year: 2025
Result: Shortlist
Location: Edmonton
Presented By: Emissions Reduction Alberta

As air quality challenges in Alberta grow, the Alberta Capital Airshed (ACA) is leading the way in public education and community engagement. The Innovations in Air Quality Public Education project goes beyond traditional air monitoring, equipping Albertans with the knowledge they need to protect their health and make informed environmental decisions.

With wildfires and other air pollution sources increasingly affecting the province, ACA has introduced creative outreach initiatives, including an Air Quality Webinar Series, real-time air monitoring at outdoor events, and the Clean Air Forum, a collaborative gathering for experts and community members to discuss air quality solutions. Their efforts also include artistic wraps on air monitoring stations, transforming essential environmental science into accessible, everyday knowledge.

By bridging the gap between technical air quality data and public understanding, ACA is empowering vulnerable populations—including children, seniors, and individuals with respiratory conditions—to take action against air pollution. The project plays a crucial role in helping Albertans adapt to worsening wildfire smoke conditions, reduce exposure to harmful pollutants, and advocate for cleaner air.
