SHS Community Greenhouse: A student-led initiative, from construction to outreach

Category: Youth
Year: 2025
Result: Shortlist
Location: Strathmore

The Strathmore High School (SHS) Community Greenhouse is a student-led, off-grid sustainability hub that is transforming education, food security, and environmental stewardship in Strathmore. Built and managed entirely by students, this free-to-use community space fosters mentorship, hands-on learning, and real-world sustainability practices—empowering youth to take climate action into their own hands.

Since its construction, the greenhouse has become a centre for food security, consistently harvesting over 20 pounds of fresh produce every two weeks for the Wheatland County Food Bank. It also enhances biodiversity, with 50 native pollinator species planted to support local ecosystems and educational signage to raise awareness. Students have even installed a student-built off-grid solar energy system using recycled panels through ARMA,

demonstrating sustainable energy solutions while addressing end-of-life solar panel challenges.

Beyond agriculture, SHS students lead environmental education initiatives. The 2024 Strathmore & Area Envirothon, hosted by SHS students, engaged over 250 Grade 6 students in sustainability-focused workshops. The greenhouse also hosts permaculture courses, composting initiatives, and outreach events, ensuring community members of all ages can engage in environmental learning.
