The Adaptation Resilience Training (ART) Program is shaping Alberta’s future by equipping students and recent graduates with hands-on experience in climate adaptation and resilience. A collaboration between the University of Alberta’s Sustainability Council and Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, ART connects young professionals with municipalities, Indigenous communities, non-profits, and academic institutions, helping them tackle real-world climate challenges.
Since its launch in 2019, ART has placed 117 participants with 45 host organizations, completing over 130,000 hours of climate adaptation work. These projects address critical environmental issues such as water conservation, wildfire risk reduction, sustainable infrastructure, and Indigenous-led climate resilience initiatives. Through partnerships with communities like Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, Mikisew Cree First Nation, and the Sahtu Region in the Northwest Territories, ART has integrated Indigenous knowledge with scientific approaches, fostering collaborative, place-based climate solutions.
