THE ALBERTA EMERALD FOUNDATION CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF RECOGNIZING AND CELEBRATING ALBERTA’S ENVIRONMENTAL ACHIEVEMENTS

EDMONTON, ALBERTA – On June 1st at 4:00 pm, Alberta’s environmental leaders, stewards, and supporters alike will gather virtually as the Alberta Emerald Foundation (AEF) announces the recipients of the 30th Annual Emerald Awards.

“We’re excited to be celebrating our 30th anniversary, and in many ways, it feels like our work is just beginning,” says Gregory Caswell, Executive Director of the Alberta Emerald Foundation. “This year’s shortlist and recipients are prime examples of the inspiring environmental leaders and innovative work taking place in our province. We’re honoured to showcase their accomplishments through the Emerald Awards and our year-round programming.”

The Emerald Awards showcase those who raise the bar in addressing local, regional, and global environmental & climate issues. In doing so, a standard of excellence is set that inspires others in their own practices. Over the past three decades, the AEF has recognized nearly 400 recipients and 900 finalists through the Emerald Awards program. This year, the AEF received nominations from all corners of the province, each sharing a unique approach to environmental stewardship. A third-party panel of judges was tasked to review all submissions and select the shortlist and recipients.

Each Emerald Award recipient receives a $2,000 grant to support the continuation of their environmental work, or to donate to an environmental charity of their choice, a profile of their work through our Sharing Stories Communications Strategy, and much more!

This year’s event will be hosted online using GreenShows, which allows us to host the Emerald Awards in a more sustainable way; carbon emissions are saved through the lack of travel to the event, food waste is nixed due to the absence of catering, and carbon offsets are provided by GreenShows at a rate of 1kg per hour per attendee.

The 30th Annual Emerald Awards will begin with a smudging ceremony by our host, Hunter Cardinal of Naheyawin. The awards will also feature a performance of Vivaldi’s “Winter” by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and a spoken-word performance by Nisha Patel, the City of Edmonton’s Poet Laureate.

Tickets are available through CanadaHelps until May 28th and can be purchased for free using the code “FRIEND” at checkout. If you miss the ticket deadline, you can watch the Emerald Awards live on our Facebook page for free!
