As the use of agricultural plastics has increased, many Alberta farmers are looking for accessible recycling options, as opposed to burning or burying on-site with harmful environmental impacts.
The ‘Alberta Ag-Plastic. Recycle It!’ program brings together partners from across the agricultural value chain to create a coordinated, province-wide recycling system. With 173 collection sites, the program provides farmers with a free and practical way to return materials like grain bags and twine. Collected plastics are processed locally and transformed into new products such as plastic lumber and drainage tile, keeping materials in use and supporting a circular economy.
Since launching in 2019, the program has collected over 5,000 metric tonnes of plastic for recycling, reducing pollution, protecting air and water, and helping shift on-farm practices toward long-term sustainability.
