The Boreal Wetland Centre: A community hub for sharing knowledge on wetland and natural environment stewardship

Category: Shared Footprints Award
Year: 2025
Result: Shortlist
Location: Grande Prairie
Presented By: Pathways Alliance

The Boreal Wetland Centre (BWC) is Canada’s first hands-on facility dedicated to wetland conservation, research, and education, serving as a unique gathering space for industry professionals, educators, Indigenous communities, and the public. Located in the County of Grande Prairie in Treaty 8 Territory, the BWC provides an inclusive, collaborative environment to develop innovative solutions for wetland management, restoration, and environmental sustainability.

Initially established as the Evergreen Learning & Innovation Centre in 2009, the site evolved into the BWC under the administration of Ducks Unlimited Canada in 2021. Since then, the centre has expanded programming to engage students, land managers, municipal decision-makers, and researchers in understanding the critical role of wetlands in climate resilience, water filtration, and carbon sequestration.

Over the past three years, over 6,500 people have participated in BWC programming as part of 117 events, projects, or gatherings.

With a focus on knowledge-sharing and collaborative problem-solving, the BWC integrates Indigenous perspectives and scientific expertise to explore best practices in sustainable resource development. The centre provides real-world demonstrations on wetland restoration, forest management, and land-use planning, helping to bridge the gap between policy, education, and environmental stewardship.
