Water conservation is a growing concern in southern Alberta, where declining reservoir levels and increasing water demand present ongoing challenges. In response, the City of Lethbridge’s Communications & Engagement team launched Water Wednesday, an educational initiative designed to empower residents with practical water-saving strategies, expert insights, and engaging storytelling.
Since its launch, Water Wednesday has played a crucial role in reducing municipal water consumption. In the summer of 2024, water use in Lethbridge dropped by 16% compared to the previous year and remained 9% below the five-year average, helping the city avoid mandatory rationing. The initiative provides weekly stories featuring household conservation tips, xeriscaping techniques, and insights from water professionals, ensuring residents have the tools and knowledge to make informed choices about their water use.
