As the world transitions to low-carbon energy solutions, Future Energy Systems (FES) at the University of Alberta is leading the way by advancing research, educating the public, and training the next generation of energy leaders. Funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, FES supports over 160 research projects that explore renewable energy, energy storage, carbon reduction technologies, and the environmental and social dimensions of energy transition.
Beyond research, FES is dedicated to public engagement and education, breaking down complex energy topics to make them accessible, science-driven, and free of bias. Through 1,500+ outreach experiences, FES has provided classroom programs, public talks, interactive exhibits, and teacher resources—reaching over 110,000 people in person and 160,000 through digital content.
Their children’s book series, online videos, and hands-on science activities make energy and climate change education engaging for learners of all ages.
