Through innovation and collaboration, Askiy Mat Service Inc., led by Sandy Sanderson of the Mikisew Cree First Nation, is transforming sustainability in Alberta’s oilsands industry. This groundbreaking partnership integrates Indigenous leadership with cutting-edge environmental solutions, proving that economic growth and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.

Askiy Mat Service has introduced a new mat-washing technology that significantly reduces environmental impact by cutting water use by 95% and eliminating 789,394 lbs. of CO₂ emissions annually—equivalent to powering 239 homes each year. By working with major oilsands operators like Suncor and Syncrude, this initiative is helping Alberta’s energy sector adopt more sustainable practices while supporting Indigenous reconciliation and economic empowerment.

Beyond environmental benefits, Askiy Mat Service inspires a new generation of Indigenous entrepreneurs, demonstrating how traditional stewardship values can drive modern sustainability solutions. Through mentorship and advocacy, the company encourages Indigenous youth to embrace leadership roles in shaping a cleaner, more sustainable future.
