About the Emerald Awards

Albertans are passionate about balancing the development of this province’s rich resources with environmental stewardship.

The Emerald Awards recognize and reward the excellent environmental initiatives undertaken each year by youth, educators, corporations, individuals, not-for-profit associations, community groups and governments.

Nominations for the 21st Annual Emerald Awards are now open.  They close on Friday, February 24, 2012.

Once nominations close at the end of February each year, a panel of knowledgeable judges, with cross-sectoral experience, carry out an independent evaluation  based on criteria outlined in the nominations package.  Each judge evaluates every nomination, and then, the panel will come together for final deliberations over two days in April.

Finalists will be announced in late-April and then, in June each year, about 500 guests gather in Edmonton or Calgary to celebrate environmental excellence in Alberta and provide recognition to those individuals and organizations whose commitment to our environment truly demonstrates leadership.

Thanks to the  ingenuity, dedication and hard work of Emerald Awards recipients and finalists, we work to share these environmental success stories so that others will follow.  Our goal is for what is now considered innovative to become the norm, and all Albertans will benefit from a healthier, cleaner environment.

The twenty-first annual Emerald Awards will take place on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 in Calgary.
