The Recipient
The City of Edmonton’s new Capital City Downtown (CCD) Plan was designed for the city to become more sustainable, vibrant, and accessible. Overall, the plan contains initiatives to reinvigorate the downtown area in an effort to improve the quality of life of Edmontonians and curb auto-oriented and land-intensive suburban development. Through implementation of the CCD plan, Edmonton will be more pedestrian friendly thanks to more sidewalks, and alternative forms of transportation such as bicycling and public transit will be accommodated. New zoning laws will restrict parking in an effort to discourage automobile use, and older buildings will be renovated to be more energy-efficient. One key component of the plan is to reduce crime levels by moving many artistic groups to the downtown in order to attract families, seniors, students and artists. A concentrated cultural area will connect people, places and activities in close-proximity to each other, thus making it easier for residents to live locally.
